From Striving To Stewarding
So often, we find ourselves striving towards what’s ahead. It’s as if we’re humanly wired to keep moving forward. In high school, it was getting into college. In college, it was finding a career. Or the MRS. degree. Then, it was planning the wedding. Buying a house. Starting the family. Trying to get that promotion. Looking for the next opportunity.
We worked hard for each milestone, believing the next achievement would finally settle us.
There was a time when I had everything I thought I wanted. Literally. I thought I’d be satisfied, but I found myself questioning God. A longing remained. I was living a really beautiful life, and one day, with guilt and tears in my eyes, I said what I was really thinking out loud.
The wrestle began. Is this all you have for me? Is this it?
I’m a faith girl and had grown up a faith girl, and here I was questioning the Creator of Heaven and Earth. The generous God who had given me so much. My life checked all the boxes. How dare I ask or question if what I had was enough? You want more?
And here’s where I want us to pause.
Since then, I’ve learned that wanting all those things in life and more isn’t wrong. Longing isn’t a problem. We were made with desire. He put eternity in our hearts. There is more. But for today, for this month, I think it would do us well to truly take a look at what’s right in front of us.
I’m speaking personally here, but I worked hard for the job I have now. I hoped for the marriage I have. I prayed for my child. I asked God for the opportunities.
Here I am. Writing to you right now. I’m living and continually stepping into all He has for me.
Where am I going with this?
Instead of acknowledging what God has already given us here, many of us have mentally moved on. We’ve cleared the space beneath our feet, and we’re looking for something else. Something new or bigger. Something that makes us feel happier or better. Something that will make us feel safer and more secure.
We’re standing on X, but we’re looking for Y. I hope we’re looking to Christ. As we do, all the while, God has placed something in our hands.
Hold out your hands and cup them like a bowl.
Before we can steward well, we have to notice well.
What if the “more” God has for you isn’t the next thing or somewhere else? What if it’s Himself?
Could stepping into abundance begin with saying, This is what I’ve been given. I will tend it well. I will multiply and make much of it.
When we slow down long enough to look at what’s already in our hands. I’m thinking practically about the relationships, your gifts, the way you’re wired, the daily routines, work and play, and the opportunities in your life. Maybe we can discover something we’ve been overlooking all along.
God has not withheld Himself from you. He’s not holding out on you or waiting until you reach the next level. He’s with us now. In Him, there’s so much more.
You know this is true, but you’re ready for it. And I’m ready to walk with you.
There’s a lot we could unpack! I want to tell you more about God. I want to tell you about how He is unchanging and how every longing we have is pointing to Him. The best is yet to come! But we’re not in a rush here. Together, week by week, my hope is we will remember that when we walk with God, we’ll find there’s so much more.
